What is an acceptable level of nitrate for a saltwater reef tank? I currently do not have a protein skimmer. My tank is 36 gallons with approximately 20lbs of liverock. My current nitrate level is between 5 and 10ppm. Should I invest in a protein skimmer and which one?

Less than 5, depends on the coral. Some can tolerate better than others. Skimmer is a toss up. Some people swear by them and then ive seen some awesome reef setups that would blow ur mind that have never seen a skimmer. Personally i have a skimmer and the gunk i see it pull out, its hard to say it doesnt help.

you have to have enough filtration to handle ur bio load to keep ur nitrates low. If i were u, id try to buy about 15-20 more lbs of good cured rock.

I do a 5% water change every monday you can be fine with a bi-weekly change of 10-15% or 25% a month but please take time to test your parameter's and you'll start to get a feel for what water change is right for you and your set-up.
