I have my salt water tank set up and am going through the cycling process. I have had several people tell me to buy a cheap fish and put in there to help the process. Does this work in a salt water tank?

hi yes it does work but their is many down falls to it
1. the fish could still get a disease from the cycle then you would have to cure it
2. if the fish survived the maturation you would then have to catch the fish if you didnt want to keep it no easy task in a tank with rock in
3. the best way to mature is use a propietary maturation fluid from the lfc.
4. the only fish which would stand the cycle are damsels which are very aggressive fish and will attack any new fish you but in or you could use living rock to mature . hope this helps

i heard drop in some shrimp(ones you would buy and eat) let them rot for a week or 2 or 3 and let that bacteria cycle... Damsels work great too.

Better get a LIonfish!!! (Radiata, Antennata) or a pineapple fish!

Using fish to cycle is an outdated method. Its relatively expensive (compared to other methods.) and its cruel to the fish. Just put in a few jumbo shrimp for a few days. When your ammonia and nitrites read zero the tank is ready, it generally takes 3 to 4 weeks.
