Hi, I just started a saltwater tank yesterday. I'm 21 years old and a full time college student, and I can't afford a ton...so I started a 20 gallon. I know I should go bigger, but I have a tiny apartment and tiny budget, so that's that. My dad always had an amazing saltwater tank while I was growing up and my new friend is a saltwater buff and has a cool 75 gallon tank, so he encouraged me to set one up (really he set it up). SO. As of right now I bought a 20 gallon tank from his friend that is just a standard tank with a light, small filter, heater, and therm. All I've bought so far was sand with bacteria and two damsels. My friend lives in the apartment below me so he brought up water from his tank and put it in mine so it has already got plenty of bacteria in it...I'd assume?
My intent for the tank would be coral with maybe a clown fish and yellow tank and blue tang? i understand they're going to get big...but I want fish....
My biggest dream is a cow fish! But i want them when they're small and maybe once they get too big sell them back to the store? I don't know, that is why i need your help! Also can I mix live rock and corals?
I'm a beginner, so cut me slack!!!
Lastly, my friend says I'm going to need a different filter and a protein skimmer before I get my fish. so what are some good quality but maybe not too expensive models?
Also, will I need special lights for coral?
I'm not trying to make this amazing on my budget, I'd rather put a ton of money into an expert bigger tank once I get the hang of everything. So please don't be too discouraging...
