i just bought a senegal that is about 3'' long. he's being housed with exos and jewels that leave him alone and tried to go for some shrimp pellets. should i be worried about him swimming near the surface a lot. doesn't look like his "breathing" is labored or anything. thanks.

vil.

is he like floating? if so yes this is pretty normal for smaller bichirs to go through. they get a gulp of air down the wrong tube or something and they float, but they should end up passing gas and getting rid of it.....if it goes on for a while you may have to manually make him pass gas.......

As long as it can swim down to the bottom with little or no problem its fine and normal for juvinile bichir to hang out by the surface.Add some floating plants for it to hangout in -Anne

so how's your poly doing vildotcom?

Has it settled in now? :)

he's doing great now. got a few nips from the exos here and there but they're learning he's not food. thank you for asking.

I just got a baby (1.5") albino and he hangs out in my floating plants quite a bit, even after getting settled in.

any pictures of your mini monster?

floating plant are always a good idea for the young ones, any kind of place to sit near the surface will be used. I have some reptile hangers in my tank with plants on them they like to get up on. If you make some spots they can climb out of the water a bit on they will, especially when they're young.
