So I went to petsmart for some ferret shampoo because the boys needed a bath. Had no intentions of buying a fish but I always gravitate to that section. Well they had some nice 3.5-4 inch senegals and I stopped to look at them. I had thought about keeping them in the past but just never bought one. The lady working starts talking to me about them. They are all active and swimming around with nice rounded bellies. She feeds them for me and they dive right on in. So long story short Calcifer came home with me. He's a cute little guy too. Anyway right now he's in a 30gallon with a blue acara. The blue nipped him here and there if he came to close to his "corner domain" but didn't do anything to extreme to the fellow. When I put him in he swam all over the tank but stayed near the top. Now he is hanging right at the top of the water line where the heater is and doesn't seem to be moving. Is this normal? I was pretty sure they were bottom dwellers and he seemed to prefer the bottom at the store. I have a lot of drift wood and artificial grass in the tank with a sand bottom. I had thought he's settle in and scope out a little overhang made by the driftwood on the bottom, but he's just floating on the top. He's not dead I did check that, he just seems to be chilling. Any advice? Is he just settling in? I've never kept a polypterus before and while I have done some reading on the group of species I have not come across anything like this. I do hope the little fellow is okay.
