So I went to petsmart for some ferret shampoo because the boys needed a bath. Had no intentions of buying a fish but I always gravitate to that section. Well they had some nice 3.5-4 inch senegals and I stopped to look at them. I had thought about keeping them in the past but just never bought one. The lady working starts talking to me about them. They are all active and swimming around with nice rounded bellies. She feeds them for me and they dive right on in. So long story short Calcifer came home with me. He's a cute little guy too. Anyway right now he's in a 30gallon with a blue acara. The blue nipped him here and there if he came to close to his "corner domain" but didn't do anything to extreme to the fellow. When I put him in he swam all over the tank but stayed near the top. Now he is hanging right at the top of the water line where the heater is and doesn't seem to be moving. Is this normal? I was pretty sure they were bottom dwellers and he seemed to prefer the bottom at the store. I have a lot of drift wood and artificial grass in the tank with a sand bottom. I had thought he's settle in and scope out a little overhang made by the driftwood on the bottom, but he's just floating on the top. He's not dead I did check that, he just seems to be chilling. Any advice? Is he just settling in? I've never kept a polypterus before and while I have done some reading on the group of species I have not come across anything like this. I do hope the little fellow is okay.

Yep, that's completely normal. They usually grow out of it after a while, although mine is over a year old and still likes to hang out around the heater.

Ah thanks very much. I feel silly for not noticing that thread before posting. I was afraid the acara had hurt the little fellow but the behavior described in the sticky sounds exactly like what he is doing. I'll have to dig around and try to find some taller plants for him to float in.

Welcome to a whole new world of fishkeeping.. I got my 2 sens in a similar situation last year.. and added an Ornate to my list as well as these guys quickly became some of the most interesting fish I keep. they are the most drab of colors I have, but they make up for it with their canine like attitudes. I swear I can see the gears working in my 3 polys at any given time.

mine does that too! like hoarding in mid-water like some hovercraft

Yeah, mine loved stayed curled by the heater, or balancing on/in the plants i had floating on the top of the tank. Congrats and enjoy your new sen, they have one of the most fun personalities I've seen in poly's.

i dont own one yet but congrats pictures are always welcomed too

mine actually loves laying on top of any floating vegetation the first couple of times i thought he was dead very healthy ive learned from diffrent ones over years they will do some weird stuff

Enjoy your Sen, they're great fish. I have 2 and when I first got em one of them did the same thing, just chilled on top of the heater haha. Just yesterday I got a Delhezi and he's been doing the same thing =P
