New sengalis and a gar

Hubbie stopped at my favorite lfs yeaterday after work and brought me a baby sengalis and a gar.
He/she is very cute, I'm nervous about the Gar though. I have not been able to find a pic of this same one anywhere. I will be phoneing the lfs when they open to find out the exact name they are selling him as.
I have so far found out that they get big, real big.
I'm worried that he's going to eat my sengalis. I have herd of some keeping them together, but I can't see how a fish that big won't eat a sengalis.
I'm starting my Big tank project around the end of June (4-5000 gal)
But I have lots of other fish including other sengalis to go in there that I don't want this gar to eat, my sengalis are the smallest ones to go in there.
Does anyone know if my sengalis will be safe?

You're planning a big tank. How the dimensions there?

How big are your senegals and how big is the gar?

I have a sengal that's 5" and the new guy is about the same size as the Gar...about 2". They are in the tank of babies right now, I have all sizes of sa/ca sichlids in different tanks.
We are in the works of getting this tank planned and planning the addition of the fish room to the house. So far it's 20x6x6.
we just finished pricing out the 1" 4'x8' sheets of plexi at 825.00/ sheet.

Just found out this guy is a characin gar or ctenolucius hujeta.
