hi all , ive read about setting up a tang tank for a while now and thought i had read that they need salt in the water (ie brackish ), so i have managed to set a little tank up with crushed coral to get the ph to around 8 and have added a little salt,
while waiting for it to mature i have just popped into my lfs and they advise that they dont have salt in the water at all ,

which is true? , if they do need salt in the water will i need to aclimatise the fish to the salt water if i buy them from the shop, or should i find a place that does keep them in salt water ,

many thanks in advance

stu

I add some little salt in my tanks. But if you can buy the salt in the shop because is the salt with minerals for tanganyika.

Rift Lake cichlids do live in waters with salt. However, their salt is derived from calcium (calcium chloride) instead of marine salt (sodium chloride). Some NaCl won't harm them but, they'd be better off if you used rift lake salts carried by many aquarium supply stores and sites.

yes alittle salt seems to work well for all cichlids. you can shells to harden the water.
