Hello,

Iam looking at building my first tank this summer as a project i have been wanting to do for about 2 years, over this time i have been reading book and browsing the web after tips and techniques.

The Location of the tank is going to be in a second floor bedroom so please take this into account if and when giving advice.

Here is the list of things i have so far that iam going to use.

The Tank

All Glass Aquarium 36Inch X 18Inch X 15Inch and 8mm Thick

The Stand

MDF Stand custom built by MNS Designs to fit the tank exactly, this will be custom painted to my custom specification.

The Filter

Ehiem 2026 Professional 2 filter

The Heater

Hydor ETH 300w External Thermal Heater Not sure of compatibility with ehiem filter

Lights

This is another thing looking for advice on

That is all i have for now, if you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would reconsider the MDF stand because it will act like a sponge when it gets wet.
Also look into coralife for lighting

What do you plan on stocking it with

I was thinking about the hardware first and getting it mature before even considering stock, then i will know the conditions of the water so i can stock it with fish accordingly.

Also how wet do stands get?? If your careful it shouldnt get soaking should it?

Your doing it the wrong way round really, you should find out what fish u want to keep first and then buy a tank to match, in a 3ft your restricted to the usually communit with tetras and platties etc or sof or a single species set up thts either small or not very active.

using MDF for a stand is like using your phone in the bath, you don't plan to get it wet but if it does get wet, you would really regret it!

A lot of the equipment could be dependent on what you want to do with the tank. MDF also soaks water fairly quickly and isnt the strongest. Have you considered building your own stand?

Ok this has thrown me off all together now!!! Should i buy a kit instead then that comes with the tank and stand that way i will know that the stand is sutible for the tank.

I only want a 3ft tank really becuase it will be upstairs and i dont want it going through my floor as dad would not be impressed.

you could get the pine or oak aga stand that goes with your tank.Or the cheapest good way to go is a metal stand

Hi Littlerich,

Total weight for your setup will be approx.

Water 30 gal. @8+ lbs.----------------- 240+ lbs.
Tank (glass) 50- 60 lbs. ?
Gravel 50 lbs.
Accessories (decor, filtration, etc..) 10-20 lbs

Total 350+ lbs.

A large dresser fully stocked probably weighs as much.
A water bed weighs alot more. So you're good
