hey everyone :-)

ive always wanted to get into saltwater fishkeeping, and had plans to eventually in the future, but i came across a deal i can't pass up. found someone selling a 55G with stand, some sort of filtration, possibly live rock, hood and lights of some sort. some mom is selling her kid's tank, and doesn't know much about fish keeping, so she's selling everything that is on the setup for $65

also included in the purchase would be a Yellow Tang, Tomato Clown and Three Striped Damsel.

now with this being my first saltwater setup, how would i go about transporting the tank and fish (short drive, only about 15-20 minutes)? also, how should i be filling the tank? should i get a ro/di system? any good ones that i should look at?

thanks in advance :-D

If possible try to tranport as much of her water as possible. Buy a 40 gal bin and fill it up with her water an then put the fish in it. Try to make two trips: First take over the water and the fish in the Bin to your house. Then take over all the equiptment in a later trip and set it all up with the same water she had in it. Hopefully this will keep the fish from expierencing too much shock. Also, when putting both them and the water back in the tank.......let the water in the tank and all the particulates run through the filter for atleast 15minutes to let the water settle before adding the fish into it.

well, i picked the tank and fish up yesterday, and it was in pretty rough shape. it's a fish only tank, not well maintained, but the fish looked pretty healthy. a huge amount of salt creep was covering pretty much everything, outside of the tank.

all the cat litter buckets my parents have accumulated turned out to be really helpful, i managed to drain almost all the water from the tank into the buckets, and put the fish in one too. brought it all home, poured the water back into the tank, let the debris settle a bit and put the fish back in.

it has an undergravel filter, and what looks to be a tetra pf-60 hob filter, along with a air bubbler. is it a good idea to try and get rid of the ugf and replace the gravel with sand? do i need to get a skimmer?

any advice for a total saltwater noob? my plan is to try and clean off as much of the salt as i can, will it hurt the fish much if some falls in the tank?

any advice is appreciated, lookin for my crash course in saltwater fish keeping :-)

There is nothing wrong with undergravel filter. You just need to add two powerheads to make it totally effective. If you are planning on adding other fish then yes you will need a protein skimmer. Or at least another filter.I have a 55 with 4 damsels a maroon clown, a hawkfish, and a Bicolor parrotfish and I have 2 whisper 30-60s and a Magnum canister and everything is pretty peachy. despite the fact I have to do a water change every 3-4 days.

2 advice for u:

1. do ur research
2. be patient
