I'm going to be purchasing a 125 gallon tank in the near future and wanted to turn it into a severum/geo tank. I'm thinking the more colorful severums, such as super red, notatus, rotkeil, etc., as well geo red head tapajos. How many of each species could live in this tank without it being overstocked? I also wanted to leave some room for a group of schooling fish, such as filament barbs.

you could put a fair number in there without overstocking.

the main issue will be compatability -you may get some quarrels between the cichlids. I would start with say 4 geos, a trio of severums, etc. and grow them all up together if possible.

another suggestion I have is rather than buying the 125g, get the 150g (72x18x29) instead. it won't take up any more room, but gives you a nicer viewing area and more water volume.

good luck

check my stock in my signature. I am doing the same thing. get a pair of rots and notatus and get maybe 5 red heads and maybe a couple of another species.

x2, I agree.

x5 tapajos orange head
x2 rotkeil
x2 notatus

If you grow them out you will be able to see if there are any trouble makers and remove them, the above will leave your options open down the road as well if you find something new you like/want to try. ;)

Another option I was considering was, instead of 4 severums, three severums, an EBJD, and 5 geo red heads with a group of schooling fish. Would this stock work also?

No. EBJD will get far too aggressive for orange heads. They will show dull colors, hide and be skidish. That would be best case, if they are not beat on too hard by the JD. Honestly, you best bet would be to put this stocklist question in the CA/SA cichlid section where most of the experts in these pspecies hang out, You will get more feedback there. ;)
