New shark and Ray indoor pond

What substrate would be best? Have one place that has lots of sharks saying do a under gravel filter with crushed coral. Then I have a great Lfs saying use live sand and a sump system or canister filter. I have a 300 gallon stock tank. What do you guys think?
 
I used sand and a sump when I was keeping sharks.Which species are you considering?

Sand for sure. Definitely not crushed coral it will irritate the sharks and rays undersides.
