My new aro is doing what aro's do---swims at the top and middle of my tank--and he's eating hikari sticks.. My question is --when he swims under the hob filter he starts stuttering(opening his mouth like he's talking or choking). He does the same thing when he gets in the flow of the power head. Is this normal??? The water tests fine...Is the flow of water to much for him?
I have kept fish for years but have not had any luck with Aro's(the one fish that I've always wanted). I just want to make sure he's ok.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,
Chris

kinda hard to say with the description of whats going on. is he struggling to breath or breathing rapidly? sounds to me like he is intentionally going to the spot where the flow is directed right at him. he might just be enjoying it.

my 9" black aro does that some times in the middle of the tank... it looks like it is trying to eat the water right? its not choking because he would go to the top of the water and gulp air. I wouldnt be worried.

It looks like he's eating the water or like he's trying to cough..lol. He's very active and not struggling to breathe I don't think. May be he is enjoying the flow of the filter. When he goes by the power head and the flow hits his tail he spins around and tries to bite the water then he goes to muttering.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

Everytime i do a water change My Aro does this. Definately nothing to worry about. Mine opens his jaw and then trys to bite sideways. Strange looking but mines been doing it since i got him and he is healthy and eats right from my hand.

My black aro does this from time to time. Sometimes he just yawns and opens his mouth as wide as possible. If your aro is gulping air from the top or breathing heavily constantly, put in an air stone. BTW post some pics. Nice to see a local MI guy keeping aros. 12" silver, I hope you didn't pay a pretty penny.

My silver aro does the same thing occasionally. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

The fish enjoys the feel of the water as well as the rush of clean oxygen pushing through their system. It is the equivalent of a dog (or a human) sticking their head out the car window on the highway. It feels good.

That sounds right!!! Hell I love to stick my head out of the car window:D!!! I noticed that he also goes to the corner and tries to bite at the glass. Is he shadow boxing with his own reflection?

Thanks for all of your input,
Chris
