I recently purchased a new silver arowana. The guy at the fish store told me that it would probably need a 180 gallon tank at minimum. I was curious what people here would think as I have come here for advice before. I was hoping that this would be a good tank mate for my florida spotted gar. The aro is currently living in a 30 gallon tank until he is big enough to be moved to my 75. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will try to post some photos but it seems that the aro is a little camera shy.

A 180g will only be good for a while, about 2 maybe 3 years at best. IMO once the aro gets over 24" it will need to be moved to a larger tank. Figure 300 plus gallons and a foot print of at least 8 foot long and 30 inches wide. Though there are many people who will keep their silvers in 180g tank even when they have grown well over 30 inches.

They grow very quickly, you can expect 1-1.5" per month on average. With most silver aro, you will see the growth slow to 1-2" per year after the 24" mark.

Quite a few people keep gar and aro together, but it is generally not recommended.

Thank you for the responses. Just out of curiousity who do you think will eat who between the gar and aro or will there just be aggression issues? Do you think the aro will make it a year to a year and a half in my 75 gallon tank?

You would have to state the sizes of the fish to get answers for the questions.

My gar is about a foot long and the aro is about 6 inches. My aro is not currently living with the gar but will be once he outgows the 30 gallon tank that he is in right now. I tried to house the gar and aro together from the beginning however the gar showed a lot of interest in the aro. How long do you think i have before i need to upgrade my 75 gallon tank?

they gar will probally kill the arowana.

the gar is showing interest since gars like to hunt silvery/shiny fish and it would prob work if silver aro is bigger than the gar as i do keep gar and aros together

Sounds to me as if you need a bigger tank now. The gar will likely destroy your aro as it is now. By the time your aro grows big enough to be housed with the gar they will both be to big for a 75g. Keeping a gar in a tank that is too small with a skittish arowana can end up with the gar breaking it's back or snout.

I recommend getting rid of one of the two fish or buying a new tank sooner instead of later.
