i got two new sponge filters and i put them in an established tank yesterday. i plan on using 2 big sponge filters as primary filtration of my 40 gallon breeder, how long should i leave them in there to get 'seeded' for my new tank? i plan on leaving them in the established tank til at the very least, next week. ive never tried the 'pre-seeding' type of cycling a new tank. so how long does it take to seed new filters??

thanks!

my estimation would be if they are in a WELL established tank to seed ,it will take3-4 weeks. they will only handle a small bio load at first ,but gradually increase load in the new tank .they will eventually handle a BIG bio- load

Thanks, it is a tank that's been established for a few years I was hoping a week or two would be sufficient being that its two sponges and the only other filtration I run is two xp3 canisters

It would help/speed the process to have the sponges near the returns from your already established filters. Preferably with the return pushing water that comes from the filter directly onto the sponges if possible. As you are aware most of the BB is in your established filters and some of that BB comes dislodged and enters the water column. If you sponges are the first things "hit" they will pick up most of the BB.
