NEW Stock: Vieja zonatum / Nandopsis tetracanthus

Finally got the stock (albeit very hopeful) for the 300 gallon, the tank should be finished in about 3 weeks.. I got up 5 Vieja zonatum 'Rio Carolina' (hoping for a harem of 1m/2-3f) and a Nandopsis tetracanthus pair. I have never owned a CA cichlid, these are my first..!

Is it common for Cuban's to have paired up at 3" TL? There is no question these two are a pair. They were strongly defending a territory at the LFS tank, while I watched them for about a half hour. She has been in "breeding dress" (?) the entire time.





















LOL lets not forget Wag... My kids gangster glassbangin swordtail who is putting a Vieja twice his size in check...

Thanks David! It feels wierd sitting here reading Weidners book easily in my confort zone but having to Google "cuban's" to make sure I spelled the scientific name right... such a n00b.. I kept my fav SA tanks running.

Wag is a stud Only fish in my house with a name lol!

Nice pickups. Welcome to the world of CA cichlids. I enjoy amazon SA fish as well but CA tend to bring a lot more personality and often color. Sometimes a lot more frustration as well. Cuban's can definately pair that young and might even spawn. Just be careful with them until they get there larger tank. I doubt the Zonatus will bother them but cubans do bloat easily if stressed and are not usually very good cichlid community type fish. In a 300g they should feel plenty comfortable though.
