New jersey
So my moms fiance is a miner and he works with a company that blasts rock and black sand. So I asked him to pick me up 2 buckets of sand and 1 bucket of smaller rocks about 1". And so he got me two buckets of sand and a bucket of rock. I cant wait to get it in my tanks. It looks so awesome. I should have it in by next week if I decide to go back to jersey and not fish 24/7 as schools over and I can do whatever. So anyways heres the sand and rock
I think its going to look really good. I plan on using the sand in my 55 and the rock in a 10 gallon and making it a planted tank and leaving my convict fry in there.

Tell me what you guys think

Okay I put it in a 10 gallon today to see how it goes. I cleaned it with my house until it was clear. I then put it in the tank and it was really cloudy. So im hoping that it starts to settle while im out at dinner. I have my filter on so it will take in any particles floating around but not disturb the bottom. Ill have to see how it goes

Okay so it started to settle and it looks 100x better than when I left the house a couple hours ago. Heres the pics

Im thinking about putting this substrate in my 55. It looks so nice!

is it rock rubble? Make sure its not a type of rock that will leech things into water and **** with it. If you see a fish upside-down for no reason. The gravel could be your answer.

I don't trust anything I get from outside because I have no idea what rock is good and what isn't. Go buy some silica sand for 5 bucks a bag and be done with the worries. Might not kill them the first week, maybe not even first year. Could be two years down the road it finally gets them. Could be the first day, you never know.

I fixed your image and moved the thread to setup and filtration.

I also wish to express the same concerns as have been mentioned by other members in regard to the potential chemical issues of the uncertain source of this rubble.

Hmmm not sure about it killing them. If it does its my fault and I will have to remove the sand. He said it is blasting sand. They use it to blast into a finer powder which is later on used to make roads. Im not sure what It is exactly. Ill ask him to ask what type of rock it is tommorow. It looks really good in the tank though. Supposedly the mine makes all different sizes of rock and this is one of the smaller sizes. The other ones are a larger size which is what I believe to be the same type of rock. I have a virtually endless supply of this stuff as he gets to take as much as he wants so I just took it to try it out. Ill see how it goes and if it goes well ill use it in my 55. If its really cloudy or just doesnt do to well ill use the larger rock in my 55
