If you have seen my postings in the DIY tank section - this is the filter I have in mind for the middle 125. I already have the twin for this particular 8.5" acrylic tube in use on the 90 I am replacing with the 125. The difference is the one in use now has a water tight bottom 'welded' to it. This new one is just a cylinder.
The redesign now includes a 15g tank as the sump. The bio media will be transfered from my existing filter and consists of plastic shipping strapping and lava rock. I will probably reuse alot of the rock inside the new tank for decor, and I am definitely adding bio-balls or scrubbies(most likely) and filling this bad boy.
I am not done yet as I need to drill this tube for the outputs of my planned overflows, and add a baffle in the 15. Also, I want to add a Porrett foam piece before the pump-but I need to get some inspiration for design for this. And of coarse-the plumbing...I plan on using more flexible tubing this time...
Here is a picture of the original tube...
Design flaw is that the pump is inaccessible without complete disassembly, I am also getting a lot of sand in the tank-cause the pump is recirculating it from the bottom of the filter.
Will post more as this project progresses.
