Hi everyone, i got a new 500 gallon tank custom built to my likings. and i have went ahead and bought matrix for the sump. but there is many compartments and i would love ideas from you guys on what to add in there for best water quality and less work and check ups. i will be having exotic fish and here in australia fish like arowana, rtgg, rays etc etc are very expensive and cant afford to lose any fish.

Thats a very beautiful sump, I'm impressed by the quality with it. Good job

As for media, bioballs would do great in the smaller compartments and matrix in the large main one

thank you mate, i will be putting bio balls in the weirs, so it gives it trickle effect and stops the loud noise from the water gushing down. i heard wool is good for collecting the small partickles?

baffles are not necessary, but since you already have them.... eventually they will fill with particulate matter and need to be cleaned. Best method IMO is a filter sock first, then ceramic media. Pump and return to the tank. Low cost, low maintenance, and easy to implement.

thanks for the info . in which way do ceramic media help in filtration? is it just for bacteria to grow on or is there more to it?

just that ^

Bio balls are my preferred media for a sump BUT only if they are used Wet/Dry! (I.e. only if the Bio balls are in air with the water trickling over them.) I don't think your design will accommodate this so Bio Balls would be pretty much useless.

I would also recommend looking at socks for prefilters.

I would put sponges in the smaller compartments.

I would put air stones under any bio media including the sponges.

I'd change it up to add a wet/dry trickle system.

That, or like suggested, add airstones to the bio section.

And filter socks for the input to the sump.
