No problem, glad to help. will be fun seeing this project come to life.

Good work mate.

Sumps really do look impressive when they have a bunch of different medias in them. The reality is that they all do only one thing; they house your bacteria population.

You can take two routes for improvement:
1. The WOW effect. If it will be a show piece or you will have a lot of visitors, you can make it look more impressive by adding additional types of medias. Especially if they are alternated in contrasting colors or dark/light.
2. Efficiency. You can use a media with more area per volume. Plastic pot scrubbers have more area than bio-balls and ceramic rings and are also cheaper than both. However, scrubbies have almost no WOW effect especially if someone says "are those pot scrubbers?" You could also use Matrix or one of the sintered glass products such as Bio-Home. Small pore media will require either periodic replacement or very good mechanical filtration upline.

Two more ideas,
1. You could trade the dry portion for filter socks.
2. Add an empty chamber before the sponge media, so that the water flows sideways instead of down and then sideways. If the sponge material is cut to fit across the sump, it will make for good mechanical filtration.

I concur, and it does need a prefilter.

What's it going to be filtering?
