my new and improved sump tank for my 120 gallon. This time it incorperates a spray/drip bar to distribute my overflow water evenly over my filter pads (not yet installed) then some lava rock below that. A better refugium this time too, for some snails and live plants. Then my new submersible return pump for much quieter operation, compared to my little giant external pump.

nice. are u gonna post pics with the filter pads ? I'd suggest using black / opaque glass for refugium walls. It'll ensure no algae grows outside refugium and on the inside proper lighting can be provided for live plants, which are excellent addition to a sump IMO.

lol I put the fake plant in there to get an idea of what it will look like when its in place under my tank.

Too late for the black glass, but good idea for future builds, and yes proper lighting will be used, I plan on adding an algae filter hanging over the back of the refugium.

Updated pictures will be provided! :)

Very nice. I'm planning an upgrade with a sump, been debating on putting a refugium on it. Just wondering how much light/plants need to be in there to deal with a certain amount of nitrates.

I guess even with zero nitrates water chnages are needed for other stuff, so any amount of plants will at lest extend the water change schedule.

I like the idea too. I am currently researching this for a future project. Hydrophyte can be an excellent resource.
Kinda' sounds like a riparium/refugium will not completely solve the Nitrate issue.
But that doesn't mean it's not a worthy and attractive project.
