Just built this 20g sump for my 75g tank. The thing works great, I have no complaints about the performance. It must turn the tank over 7-8 times in an hour, maybe more. my rainbows don't mind the flowing current in the tank. The only complaint I have is that it is just too damn loud. I have a 1200gph pond pump and it sounds like a washing machine and is causing so much vibration. I don't want to have to go out and buy a whole new pump, so I need ideas on how to just make it quiet, since its in my room.

raise the pump with some zip ties to suspend it in the water to dampen the noise, you could also use a durso standpipe and raise the level in your overflow so the water isn't falling as far, if you have already done that take a ball valve over the return and find a flow that the pump runs best at. you could also try to raise the water level in your sump. if none of this works move to a smaller pump 1200gph pump is slightly oversized for your aquarium.

yeah I will give that a try. I knew it was too oversize but i got it brand new at a thrift shop for $10 which was a deal I just couldn't pass up haha. I put a T leading back into the sump in order to divert the water flow into the tank, so it's probably only doing 500-600 GPH. the water and overflow is not too loud it's just the vibrations from the pump which is annoying.

put some kinda damper like sponge or foam under the pump and raise the water level a bit to help dampening the noise.

if u need a 600 gph pump i got one sitting in my garage doing nothing, trade ya for the 1200.

No thanks. I managed to reduce the sound by a ton by putting one of those industrial yellow construction sponges underneath the pump. It works like a charm and I can barely hear anything now. The pump flow was not the problem it was the vibrations and noise. I can manipulate the flow to as low as I want.
