i've got some more sunfish out of the feeder tanks at work yesterday, 4 of them to be exact and i'm pretty sure they're green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) there are 2 of them that are maybe 2" long and the other 2 are about 1 1/8" long and very neat little fish. they all will joyfully eat live worms and will mouth flake foods but don't swallow but i'm planning on eventually getting them onto prepared foods. these guys are neat little fish, the two larger ones were displaying a little bit for each other to establish dominance and the two little ones were doing the same but the the bigger ones don't bother to pick at the smaller ones. There is a pecking order established right now that is pretty much biggest->2nd biggest->2 little guys, it was interesting because that's the first thing they did this morning. they spent about 30min figuring it out and once everybody knew it they all mostly stopped. for now they're in a BB 10g QT with an AC20 for filtration(ran on another tank so it should have a decent about of bacteria) with some fake plants for cover and a light salt dose(about 1tbsp/5g). they're going to stay in the QT tank for at least a few weeks and probably longer until i get the 180g suitable or set up a larger tank or sell them(probably going to sell them)

oh, forgot to ask. does anybody else here have any experience w/ these guys? they seem like really neat and not half bad looking fish.

they are great fish, to keep all 4 of them in the same tank you would need a 75 minimum, but a 100 gallon tank would be better, they should take flakes within the next couple of days, my wild-caught greens took to flakes in less than a day

My 1st native caught was a Green sunfish from lake Mead NV, great fish to have, a good sized tank will be best for these guys, and feeding was not a problem at all, they will eat anything and everything there is.

they're in the 10g as a QT so i don't introduce anything to my 180g, after all they did come out of a deathco feeder tank that has a history of parasites and bacteria infections, i have a feeling that one of them right now may have a bacterial infection in his tail, i'm going to wait and see if it clears up or gets worse. i'm glad to hear that they will be easy to convert to flakes, they've taken freeze dried bloodworms so far. if i decide i don't want to keep them then there is a guy at the local aquarium society that breeds sunfish and i'm sure that if he isn't interested than somebody else there will be.

so far i really like them, don't know why because they're fairly shy but they are neat fish. i found my cichlid crisps today and that didn't interest them at all so after a 1g water change and some more salt they got a good amount of worms again. fatherof5, i'll keep you in mind after i decide exactly what i want to do with them, i know that i'm probably going to put them into my 180g for awhile but i might be willing to part with one or two, i'll keep an eye out for more coming in with our feeder shipments and if you really want i'll pull them out for you and i would be happy to QT them for a few weeks to make sure they're healthy. do keep in mind though that i've never tried shipping anything live before.
