I have a relatively new tank (about 3 weeks fully cycled) with 2 established HOB filters running. They are very noisy. So I read up on this sunsun canister filter that seems to be able to do the job quite well and very near silent. My big concern is this: is there going to be a major upset to my tanks parameters if I switch to the canister so soon after becoming established?

you need to keep the hob's on for a few weeks once you add the canister... if you take off your hobs, you will remove all your hard earned bacteria. after a few weeks you can ditch em.

I was thinking the same thing. Another thought ran through my head though, couldn't I just put the old cartridges from the HOBs into the canister and have the same effect? It would be nice to free up some of my outlets (and use a bit less energy)

pre soak your new filter media in the tank for a few days with an air bubbler under them, that will help instil some healthy bacteria into your new canister and speed up the process.

btw ive got a 2000ltr per hour Sun Sun canister filter with inbuilt 9v UV tube and its a total beast, silent as anything and powerful as your garden hose!

I would keep the old filter running and add a SUNSUN canister. If yours comes with the bio media then just get it running and add a good bacteria supplement in a bottle to the filter media to help boost the bio filtration.
