Hey guys I got my first tang friday (about 48 hrs ago), he is a 4 inch yellow tang. Aside from a few fin nips he looks to be in great shape. No visiable symptoms of any disease fins are open and he is eating everything I offer him with vigor.

But...I have seen him flash against rock a 4 or 5 times over the past two days dose this mean he has an infection? or could he just be getting a scratch in because it feels good?

Ehh, mine does that on occassion and it gets me riled up and staring through the tank to see whats going on, but nothing has ever come of it. Mine still eats and swims around the tank.

could be ich

perks of QT I suppose....I will just keep an eye out for any symptoms and hold any treatment untill I know for sure.

It could be ich, but as long as the itching isnt causing damage, and he isnt doing it constantly, you should be fine. H2o changes and good nutrition will keep ich away, even though it is most likely living in all systems. It is just waiting for the fish to get stressed out to expose itself.

I figured it out, every time I kill my skimmer to feed it blows micro bubbles for about 20-30 min after I turn it back on. Well the tang only flashes when there are micro bubbles in the water, dont blame him because they probably tickle a bit. Soooo thanks guys for all the insight but I dont think there is any ich. :headbang2

why do you turn your skimmer off during feeding?

I was wondering the same thing. Definitely leave it on when feeding.

Also, it has nipped fins? I would be very cautious in the future buying fish from a store where there is blatant aggression going on. They must be inappropriately stocking the tanks, thus causing added stress that may kill them before they ever have a chance in your QT. Since you already have the fish, make sure you keep him in quarantine for a month to let the fins heal fully and watch closely for signs of ich. Tangs are especially susceptible and may not show it for a while until the disease builds up in your QT.

I only do it when I feed mysis (deff not the only food I offer), just because it is a 29g QT with a HOB on it, I dont want to feed the HOB/skimmer and they are on the same power strip so I just hit the switch instead of pulling the plug. I suppose tommarow I could mount another power strip up to keep it all seperate.

I say nipped, by that I mean looked like light nipping and/or fraying on the tail fin. He didnt look beat up, chewed on or starved so it might have been minor aggression or stress i'm not sure. As far as the LFS goes they are a pretty reputable store. Thanks for the advice though, I will deff keep him in QT for a month under close observation.

I turn my skimmers off...sometimes during feeding.

For example...when I feed coral food, the last thing that I want is for it to get sucked up and skimmed out, so I leave my skimmer off for about 45minutes and just let the powerheads circulate the stuff. Then I turn the skimmer back on.
