so i finally decided to go with some tang. cichlids thanks to all the help and ideas i got here. bought my first few fish yesterday....1 julie, i think a transcriptus but i'm not sure, 3 a. compressiceps (red chikata?) and 1 n. tretacephalus, my personal favorite. they are all very small and very cool looking, can't wait to see how the colors turn out. i will probably be adding some tropheus, maybe some a. calvus, and i'd love to get a polyodon if i can find one...thanks for the help guys, i'm on my way to a sweet group of fish:headbang2

very good to hear that another tang lover like me decided to have a tang specific tank!i own a beautiful 125 with close to 40 very happy tangs!its an awesome variety that i have.well i wish u the best luck with ur tank and a lil advice ,tropheus very hard to keep alive in a tank with different species!ive lost over a dosen ...:clap

You'll be glad you did. I would maybe think about putting in some shellies. Sunspot Brevis are some of the more interesting tangs. I have a Big male(by big I mean 2.5"), and three females. They are very protective of their shells. They will bite my hand when I work on the tank. Funniest thing you'll ever see. Look into Leloupi, and Negreventis. I agree about the tropheus. I have ten of them, and 3 just passed from bloat. It's very common with tropheus. They are voracious eaters. They will eat so many pellets. Then the pellets expand and cause them to get bloat.

thanks for the advice...maybe i will forget about tropheus for now then, they are way too expensive for me to have to worry about those kinds of problems...what do you guys think about a polyodon, or furcifer?? would those be ok choices??? not that i have any idea where i could find either of them.

just wondering. would it be a good idea to maybe put them in water for a few minutes to let them expand or something beforehand? just throwing around an idea

Don't know why every one has problems with tropehus, I have never lost one and I have probably kept over 50.

these are my personal recommendations:leptosomas, shelldwellers, calvus, compressiceps, xenotilapias, gobies, furcifers, and ventralis.this is a list of the top of my head that i recommend and that i have personal experiences of keeping them all together and have a great tank.one more i left out frontosas.good luck anymore q's let me know im pretty good with tangs

Tropheus should not be kept with other Tang's. Reason: Much different dietary needs. Tropheus need a veggie diet, loaded with Spirulina, other Tang's need higher proteins and do not do well on veggies.
I have kept and bred Tropheus and I have only kept them with Synodontis...also some people have successfully kept them with some lesser aggressive Mbuna.

I have tropheus with my fish I lost one b/c i jumped the tank o__o and the other cuse it got picked on. The last one I have in my tank is doing good though. Also have some in another tank with some tangs and they all doing fine so far.

Anyways congrats on some awesome fish!! =)
