Hello, HOLA, I am just venturing into the world of tangs. I went to a swap, and these guys had Altolamprologus compressiceps "Gold Head". I knew what they were from researching tangs and also knew that not very many places even carry tangs around here, let alone A comps. My question is in researching I have read that an adult needs an aquarium of at least 100 gals, but alot of people on mfk keep them in 55 and 75 gal tanks. So obviously the bigger the better, but what does everyone feel is an appropriate sized aquarium for these fish. Also, I did just buy them today, and they are in a 20 gal long and are only .5-.75 inches long. I have tried fry food and frozen baby brine shrimp, but they will eat neither of these. They are F1+ not sure what generation, but I will not have baby brine shrimp for at least 24-48 hours. Is there any thing else I can try?

I used crushed up flakes when I first had mine it was about that size. Baby brine shrimp worked the best for me though. They do get around 6 inches males and 4 inches females. A 55-75 depending on how many you have if you have alot then Id say 90-100 when you have fish that stay relativley smaller such as 5-6inch fish then I think it really depends on how many.. the less you have the smaller in tank size you can go down..

...Are we talking about Alto compressiceps here? 100+ gal tank? What?

You can easily keep a trio (1m, 2f) in a 33+ gal tank.

A ALTO COMPRESSICEPS CAN EASILY BE HOUSED IN A 29 GALLON ALONE WITH MUCH SPACE FOR MOVEMENT... I NOW KEEP MY TWO IN A 55 GALLON AND THEY never HAVE CONFLICTS OVER SPACE OR FOOD... THEY ARE A QUITE PEACEFUL SPECIES AND JUST LIKE ANYOTHER ALTOLAMPROLOGUS SPECIES, THEY WILL EAT ANY SMALL FISHES... FOR TWO TO GROW OUT, A 29-55 WOULD BE JUST FINE...

I would say more than a 29... The foot print when mature will need more room. They take forever to grow, but 5-6 inches need some room to move. I would put then in a larger tank with some other fish... 55 would be great... but until then I have a one in a 20 long with some shellies, until it moves with others into a 135...

Is there other fish in the tank(dithers or little cichlids)?
I find new additions eat better when they see the other tankmates feeding.
