Hello all. I haven't been on here in a few years, as I have been moving constantly all over the US. I am now in Germany and I will be here for several years. With that I am setting up a new tank and getting a shoal of either Natties or Caribe. My last shoal of Natties was a great success.

I am getting a 500 liter (about 130 gallon) long tank in the next couple of weeks and will start cycling it. I will have some convicts in there for a few weeks prior to adding the P's. My head is spinning on all the new filtration technology. I am not sure where to begin.

My last tank was a 120 gallon with 2 powerheads in the corners attached to an undergravel filter and 3 emperor 400's with biowheels. I did weekly 50% water changes and never had an issue with water quality...etc.

Any advice on filtration, heating, lighting or anything else would be greatly appreciated! Also remember I am in Germany, so not everything that is available stateside is available here as I am finding out! o_O

Thanks!

My wallet is trembling violently as I think about the cost! Starting with a more direct question, I want to have some planting and I want the lighting to be directed to certain areas, kind of like sunlight shimmering through a hole in the trees. Is there a way to do that without breaking the bank with a controllable kessil LED spotlight?

Hello ,

i would build a sump for the tank.
You can use a overflow box if you have no holes drilled.
With a nice sized sump you are very flexibel.
And its cheap to build.

Regards Malte
