Ok, so Im getting a big tank... well not as big as some, but big for me. It will be 72x24x24 with a 50x18x17 sump. Im upgrading from a 48x18x16 which currently houses IT's, various bichirs, spotted gar amongst other things. I liked the idea of a sump, for increased water volume as well as increased filtration volume and hidden equipment. i've never had a sump before so im not entirely sure what to put where. Will also have a large external. My big question is about substrate. I dont like the look of a bare bottom (on a fish tank anyway) although I can see why others do it. What I want is sand. Ive read snippets here and there about pool filter sand. First off, is all pool filter the same? i have seen stuff on ebay that is around 1mm particle size. Is this the norm? Ive read that pool filter sand is heavier than normal sand- big fish churning up a sandstorm is in the back of my mind... Anyone know where to get pool filter sand in or near plymouth (uk) Oh, and does anyone know how much a 6x2x2 tank weighs? just the tank, not with water. thinking of carrying it into position. When it arrives (late jan/early feb) ill get some pics going. Thanks for the help :)

a 180 is a big tank IMO... thats a big upgrade, my upgrade was from a 75 to a 120... post pics when you get it...

Oh, its big... but i read on here about the 3 or 4 hundred gallon tanks and wow id love that. no room unfortunately. 72x24 footprint is all i can realistically fit and i wouldnt trust my (soon to be reinforced) floor with anything higher. Not to mention the cost. Taller tank, thicker glass, lots more money. Im planning on taking pics from the start, including mods to floor. Once christmas is out the way ill be starting.

When I told my dad i was getting a big tank he thought i was talking a floor to ceiling job. he seemed a little disappointed lol. Ive no doubt after having the 180 for a while ill be thinking about how and where i can put something bigger. My living room is 17x14 so i would have plenty of room if it wasnt all stupid shaped. there isnt a right angle in it, 2 walls have windows, one has a fireplace and the other is open to the dining room which is where the tank is going

my 48x24x24 weighs 150 LBS so your 72x24x24 should weigh about 225 LBS, when filled with water it would probibly weigh about 1500-2000 LBS...

Oh thats lighter than i thought. I read on one site around 200kg/440lbs and was a little worried about actually getting the thing in my house. Im expecting somewhere in the region of a tonne including gravel rocks etc. hence the reinforcement project. 100+ year old house is either good or bad.. its old so it was made better than the houses built today, but cus its old im not sure what state the joists are in. Nothing some 6x2's and a bunch of breezeblocks cant cure!
