Im going on a co op position next semester and will have some money to spend, I am thinkin of upgrading from a 55 to a 75 gallon, I would like to do a discus tank, my lfs said I should go with the Rena XPs as far as filtration. I am wondering how people feel about these, my plan for the tank is as follows

Stock
4 Discus
2 Angels
12-18 Neon Tetras
6 Cory Cats
and some kind of pleco, or otto, perhaps a zebra if my connection comes through for me

The tank will be the 75 regular size 48x18x18 I think it is, as far as lighting goes I am planning on a DIY setup in a canopy with pry 2 40w full spectrum and 2 actinic blue or 1 blue and 1 red, I am in college and my time commitments fluctuate so the filter needs to be able to support the bioload for more than a few weeks without having to be cleaned.

My present tank is a 55 gallon s

Stock
2.5" Discus
2 Large Angels (will be given away to a friend)
1 Large Bala Shark 14"
Silver Dollar
6 Corys
1 small pleco
African Butterfly

Equipment
Aqua Clear 110
48" Flourescent modified to accept an additional 30" bulb

XP3 is not a bad filter. I own a few and are happy with them. You already own a AC110 and those are great for mechanical seperation. I would run the AC110 and get a wet/dry with siphon overflow for your new tank.

Here is a link to some inexpesive wet/drys or you can always make your own.

If you're going DIY (and not planting the tank) make your own wet/dry while you're at it:D

I think after a while, you won't have any neons! Wet/dry or canister will work

I realize that the neons wolnt last forever, I plan on buying the angels small so the neons will provide some color until everything else grows out. Ive done angels and discus before and had no problems, I have kept the angels quarentined for over a month before being introdced

What are the prices on those wet/drys, have found the Rena XP3 for 110ish how do those compare after you purchase all of the other equipment

I am planning on doing this entire tank on a budget of 500 + what I can get for my 55, what would be the best option for the money
