Hey guys!

So after re-watching some seasons of River Monsters I have fallen in love with the sheer destructive kill power of the wolf fish. Now Im not planning on gettin the jumbo one Jeremy Wade caught that gets to 5', but I was considering either the Common wolf fish (hoplias malabaricus) or the Black wolf fish which gets a bit bigger (hoplias curupria). I think realistically common wolf is what I would be gettin because I have never seen a black in Montreal, so what I wanted to know is what size tank would a common wolf need? I've seen that they get to a size of 14"-20", I understand bigger would be better, but Im looking for a "comfortable" fit (not bare minimum). Iv seen recommended tank sizes range from 75-180. What do you guys think?

commons wolves should be kept by itself in a tank with one or 2 hiding spots. A 75 gallon tank can suit it for a very long time. But the bigger the better. They get 14 to 20 inches.

kool! About the keeping it by itself thing, if I were to keep it with a big pleco like a gibbiceps would that work? Obviously I would initially get the pleco bigger than the wolf. once again all theory

absolutely no plecos IMO. They suck on the wolves and leave an ugly mark and infection.

Hmmm so scrap that. What is a possible tank mate that you've kept? Or is a species tank a better idea

I had a common wolf years ago and it acted like a sunken log most of the time.I hardly ever saw it move unless I threw a few feeders in the tank.I was kind of turned off to wolves due to that experience but Im not sure if that is typical of them...or if that matters to you.

Well the good news is im still in school and i work, and have a slew of other stuff, so im starting to realize more n more besides when i feed my fish or lock myself in my office to do work, i dont get to spend a lot of time watching them swim. So a fish thats only active at feeding time isnt that bad for me lol. But either way this whole notion is from a sudden spark of want for a wolf, still gota go n shop for a tank n etc. So we'll if I even manage to get one

Ya common wolves aren't your typical interactive fish. They just lie at the bottom of the tank for an entire day and then only move when there is food. i would actually choose a red wolf fish or a black wolf.

I was considering the black too, its just finding one in Montreal thats tuff. But would i get the same tank for a black wolf?

a 125 gallon can fit the black wolf for a long time if not for life.
