My new 220 has a single overflow with three hole in the bottom of it. I use two canisters for filtration. What should I do? Can I run the two outputs of the canisters into a Y and run a single return? And how do I connect pvc to the bulkhead on the inside of the overflow. The way it is set up now it seems like I will just be filtering the water in the overflow, like my filtering wil be severly limited.

Take the bulk heads out and go to the hardware store. Find what size PVC slips into the inside of it. To can PVC glue it in. you should be able to run both returns into a single but is will restrict flow and on a 240 you will want the most filtration you can get. If it was me I would plug one of the holes and run the other 2 to the canisters with the returns back over the top of the tank on the outside.

What size canisters do you have?

Yeah i was thinking of remaking the outputs to go over the lid of the tank (lid has a considerable overhang) and having two inputs from the tank bottom. now I just need to plug the third hole. i have a rena xp3 and rena xp4 now. Im thinking of going to wet/dry or sump but thats a big step for me

use the third hole for easy draining for water changes. put a ball valve on it and a hose connector.
Now thats thinking. You may also need it later for another canister... That is a mighty big tank for those two canisters.
