So, my mom needed to set up a tank for her 5th grade class. I knew that some kids might get their start in fishkeeping because of her tank. Also, I knew I would get the fish when she is done. So I set up a 15 tall in her class, with a Firemouth, a green terror, and a Jack dempsey. I used several large pieces of driftwood, and a large rock for hiding places. it has an Aquaclear 20 filter, http://www.petmountain.com/product/...ar-20-formerly-100--5-20-gallon-100-gph-.html and a tetra submersible heater (2-15 gal.) http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=12959 and I cant remember the brand of areator. And the chiclid food floats (in a tall tank, so they dont eat it).

Basically, I see 2 problems (if there are others, PLEASE tell me); it is too tall, and it is not cycled. if I switched to a 10, it would fix the first, but exaggerate the 2nd. WHAT DO I DO?

well the tank is to small for all those fish. and hikari and omega one make a good sinking cichlid pellet that is regularly available. and since you have fish creating waste you could use seachem stability to help supplement bacteria to your bio filter.

I know it is too small long term, but I have tanks I can move them into (sorry, I forgot to mention that). is it okay too leave them in their for like a few weeks or a month or 2? I might be able too put them into a 20 long later, but if I dont have too right away, I dont want to (because my mom doesnt have a lot of room).
P.S. Thanks for the quick replies.

REMOVE THEM ASAP!
putting them in that small of a tank will stunt them!
causing harm in the future!!

With a classroom tank, I think one of the most impressive things for teaching would be a peaceful community tank that included schooling tetras and live bearers like guppies. I know they are not as impressive as cichlids but I still remember my first tank 25 years ago; watching a guppy give birth to over 30 young, wow that was impressive! There are lots of things that could be put in the 15g tall, the cichlids you mentioned are just not a good choice.
