I am at a total loss as to what to do with my tank. Not quite as big as most of yours, wish it could be, but space prohibits. I bought a new All Glass tank, 2 months ago. CANNOT get the water to clear up. Tank is a 55 gallon with 2 baby oscars, and a pleco. Running an Emperor, the biggest one. The water has only been crystal for one week, and that was after 6 weeks of being up and running. Water changes are not helping, neither is cleaning the gravel. Help, Help, Help??

Could be an algae bloom. Try some "no more algae" (unledd you have live plants or inverts, in which case disregard this) and keep the light off for a few days. Ease up on the feeding a bit also. Usually, from what I have experienced, the biggest causes of cloudy tanks are overfeeding and over lighting.

Also, If you are using the Emperor 400 (I believe is rated up to 75 gallons) you might want to try adding another filter. Oscars tend to be nasty fish, they produce a lot of waste and are very messy eaters. Keep us updated!

Would the smaller emperor work? I am ready to do anything!! This has been driving me nuts. I was looking around, and someone said something about Mardel Brite N Clear?
Make any sense, or should I just get the other filter and the no more algae stuff?

Thanks for the quick reply!! I will keep you updated!

My 55g is running a fluval 404, and will soon have an aquaclear 50. I had a real problem with the cloudy water in my 29g, and I had a few decorations and fake plants. I did a 20-25% water change including gravel vac, then I cleaned/changed out the filter media. I added the recommended amount of no more algae and left the lights out for 2 days. By the third day, the cloudyness was gone, and I havent seen it since. I would try this if you don't have plants or inverts before you go out and buy another filter.

Also, keep direct sunlight off the tank, and only feed what they will eat within 30 seconds (try floating pellets and frozen krill over flakes).

Let me know how it goes.

Is your tank cycled? If it is maybe you are overfeeding. You're overstocked as well because when they grow to full size you'll need a bigger tank. That aside maybe you're just over feeding.

I like to think it is cycled. It has been up and running since feb. 17th. Shouldn't that be long enough?? I had perfectly clear water, last week, for a week to the day, then the cloudy again. I did 50% water change, gravel vac, and no change, if anything, cloudier.
I know that I will have to get another tank for one of the oscars, but at this point, am considering taking them back to store, and trying angels. This has really just about taken me to the end of my rope, lol. But am gonna leave the lights off, try some no more algae, and one more water change, and see what happens.

Thanks for responding!

ya i had same prob on my new 150. just do all the stuff that everyone is saying like dont over feed and work on the alage bloom and stuff and then give it some time and it will clear up.

First I would cut the lights for a couple days. Second how are you cleaning the gravel. Don't stir it up use the gravel siphen in the plunging motion. Try to cut down the feeding a bit. I personally think 50% water change is too much at one time. If all else fails Go with a Fluval 404 canister or Eheim and buy something called Acural F its the best water clarifier I've ever used. Hope some of those suggestions help

I have also heard that I should take the carbon out of my filter??? Don't need any holes in the head, lol! Sorry, I know I sound stupid. But the last tank I owned was acrylic and used, and had absolutely NONE of these problems. This is the first time I have ever owned a brand new glass.

Once again, THANKS to ALL of you who are trying to help. Am head to lfs now!

Keep in mind that overfeeding and too long of a light cycle is probably the #1 reason for an algae blum or algae growth period. The old rule of thumb is only feed what they can eat in 1 minute, i would even cut back on that and don't leave your light on except maybe 5-6 hours max in the evening when you get home from work. Longer on the weekends.
