I just gave a buddy my fancy goldfish and emptied out my 29 gallon. Now that I have no fish in the bedroom tank, I am considering upgrading to a 40 breeder or a 46 bowfront for a small community. I kind of want a couple keyholes and bolivian rams? Anyone have any experience with keeping these fish together? I've read they are about the same as far as temperament. Also any suggestions on something empty space fillers to make the tank for active? Considered rummy nose tetras. Other colorful fish to contrast with the keyhole, rams that would live well together?

School of rummys and school of cardinals for the midwater. A small group of corys for clean up. Marble hatchets for topwater.

I don't think that you should have a problem as long as there is plenty of cover for everyone. The 40 breeder would be a much better footprint.

I would limit it to one or the other. Keyholes act like dwarves, but get fairly large. A group of four eye phantom tetras and a pair of keyholes would give you a good biotope theme. While glowlights come from the same area as well, they are likely to be eaten once the keyholes are full size.

Bolivians wouldn't enjoy the high temps for cardinals, lemons, or rummys. They are from further south of the Amazon. Black neons or black phantoms would be a good match along with a small group of bolivians.

Here's the thing with Keyholes: they will eat rummies, cardinals, neons - any of those Tetras.

Bolivian Rams won't, at least not in my experience.

I have kept Bolivians and Keyholes together. It was fine, but it was a 4 foot tank and that could make a difference.

Thanks everyone. I think I may just go with Bolivians then since they do not get quite as large as keyholes and I want more than just a single specimen in the tank. Any other ideas of some good colorful fish to go along with them? Also, I am planning on relocating my Zebra pleco from my larger SA tank to this tank. My severum and chocolate are getting alittle too large. I'm afraid it may end up as lunch. Would it be an issue keeping a single Zebra with a small group of cories on a 40 breeder footprint?

Oh compatibility wise they would be fine, I only recommended one pair or a group based on the limited footprint available.

OP - Black neons, red or black phantoms, or neons would all work with bolivians. Black neons and black phantoms are biotope correct with the rams if that interests you. I'd avoid serpaes, bloodfins, and buenos aries tetras though with the rams.

If you are going to rehome the zebra pleco though, I'd go the keyhole route. Their temp range is much closer to what the zerba's is. You could get a group of small keyholes, grow them out (they aren't the fastest growers in the cichlid world) and then remove the extras once a larger pair forms.
