3 days ago I set up a 25 gal tall aquarium. I used about 1/3 old tank water and the rest tap, then dechlorinated. I had the level down so lots of water action from filtration and I have a long air stone going. There are no live plants. I'm not doing a fishless cycle, but plan on putting 4 black skirt tetra's in there for a bit, which I have. I've been putting a pinch of flake food in daily too. I know it's not long enough.

I have some bacteria supplement. Can I use it as a one time application, or if I do, do I need to keep using it?

The reason I'm in a hurry is I have 13 large Platys, 3 Cory's, a Pleco and 3 Otto's I need to get out of a 10 gal tank that I was given!!

Can you take some filter media from existing filters and place on your new tank? Can you move the filter from the 10 to the 25. If you can do this, you'll simplify and expedite the whole process. Even gravel from an existing tank added to a new tank can help.

keep up on partial water changes and read the instructions on the bottle or check out usage instructions online :) Otherwise I don't think you need it if you've got seeded bacteria already.

Actually, you can just unplug the old aquarium and run your entire setup in the new one. The bioload is the same and the fish have more space...

as long as you properly remove chlorine and have the same temperature, you will have no cycle issues; you don't even need starter bacteria.

I'm confused...
you're so worried about getting these fish out of the 10G that they are LIVING in that you're willing to kill them to do it?

use the old filter with the current media for the 10G in the 25G. don't clean it, or change media.
what kind of filter is it?

I never said I was putting them in the new tank yet! I just don't want to wait 5-6 wks! I put old filter media in the new filter in 25 gal 3 days ago and was planning on putting 4 bl skirt tetra's in it, to help with the cycle! The filter in the 10 is small! The new one is a Tetra Whisper EX30.

snailkeeper, if the filter can work in the small aquarium, it can work in a big aquarium with the same amount of fish. Just add a bigger one in conjunction with the small one so you can switch over eventually...then you don't have to wait.
