Hi
I wanted to document a little of my tank upgrade that I've gone through over the past few months.
It's not monster by some standards, but it's still a pretty big process to go through.

So firstly the old tank and stock...
210 litre (ish) or 55gal.
Owned this tank around 15 years and it's gone through quite a lot of changes.
Inhabitants are Gibbicep Pleco, royal panaque, 5 Filament Barbs, 7 Clown Loaches, striped zebra loach, pakistani loach, 3 male bristlenose pleco. (I think that's it?) Obviously overstocked, had been waiting for the wifes permission to upgrade.

So permission granted I continued by search and found a second hand 5' x 2' x 2.5' 600 litre (160gal). Exactly what I wanted: ND aquatics with lid on a modern stand filters etc included.
Currently housing some discus, clown loaches, corys, small tetra, bristlenose and a 3 beacon pleco.
Only problem was it was a 4-5 hr drive away. Time to call in some help for a lads roadtrip!

Moved the old tank to the next room.
Hired a van (should have gone bigger), picked up 2 mates and off we set.
Arrived about 2pm and spend 2 hours finishing the drain down.
Transferred fish into containers with airstones for the hang around and journey back.
Finished draining and removing the old sand before lugging 160kg of tank, stand, all equipment (including a lot of extras) and fish around the house and into a van which I really wish had been bigger! With half a mm to spare the tank and stand were in and the rest was packed in and around.
Back we drove, 4+ hours later after some nervy speedbumps, we dropped discus off at their new home (they were not part of my plans) and arrived home ready for the unload.
We needed to get the tank setup that night (I was trying to keep media alive), but the fish were temporarily going into the overstocked 200l.
Acclimatised the fish slowly (they were in RO, but I use tap water) and they were getting cold by this point.
Got everything else unloaded and stand into place. Wifes reaction was priceless (doghouse for me) but it has to go in the middle not to the right of the wall. "you mean I could have gone bigger?!?"
Called another mate, as it was a 4 man job to move the tank, and set that on top.
Pipes and electrics sorted, pizza stuffed in face, time add water!
Meanwhile lets put the fish in the temporary home.... Sadly the tetra didn't make it, but everything else was moved in.
Time to drop the lads off and go to bed, but not before switching filters on and nearly forgetting to add water conditioner! Very tired by this point.

Next morning... Time to check the tank. Heaters failed! OK, I have a backup and house was almost 20 deg C anyway.
And I forgot to move the whole tank back the extra 6" that I left for pipework fitting (did I mention I was tired?) so it's still a bit far out from the wall.
Over the next 2 days added new heater, sand, decor, plants, airstones etc. And here's the result.
Have to say I was pretty pleased

Meanwhile fish were surviving next door, but really needed to move to something bigger... (That's for the next post)

Update - Adding existing stock

First some problems
- I should have cleaned the filter pipes
- Make sure the in and outlet tubes are secured to the filters. Otherwise you get wet!
- Put a mat under the filters to reduce the cabinet vibrations.

Right that's done, time to add fish. Which ones to move first?
Decided to move the barbs first, as they were investigating and looking flustered by the additions.
Move no problem, gave them 24 hours and the next day they looked like they were ready to breed. Males developed a red belly and the were chasing after the females.

I may have given it another 24 hours at this point, but I don't remember exactly.
Anyway time to add the rest of the fish and... Attempt at aquascaping destroyed!

But the dream of dancing clown loaches is now reality!

Update - Filter upgrades

As mentioned I didn't clean the filters from the move.
I purchased some biohome media to replace the current media
Nearly vomited when I opened the canister. Having been filtering discus which were mainly fed beefheart. The smell still lingers in my nose!

Cleaned what I dared on one filter only. There are 2 fx6's, so while I wanted to keep the active media, I had to check what was in there.
Ultimately I ended up doing a bit of a clean, taking the trays out and filled empty space with biohome I had in my old filter.

I waited about 2 more weeks before doing the same on the other side and filling empty space with new biohome.

After roughly another month I replaced the sponges and old media in filter 1 with new bihome.
And after another month I did the same with filter 2.

During all this there is also a sponge filter running in the main tank, although this would be needed for starting a small 60l.

By now we've noticed some more behaviour changes in the fish. The barbs in particular are sparring every morning and one of the females has bloated

And the males really blushing red.

(I've since made a mop and had a couple of spawns, but no fry.)

And after the boys birthday, the sponge filter was repurposed

All this time the plants are taking a beating!

Update - coming out
One guy I hardly saw previously suddenly appears on a regular basis
1656939764227.jpeg
Maybe it's because he used to get chased regularly, but whatever the case loving the green colouration!

Meanwhile still to this day yet to see the 3 beacon out in the open Although he's still alive

Adding more fish...

So by now I'm itching to add more fish, but what to add?
The main focus of this tank is the clown loaches, but I want something else that will be happy with the barbs.
More barbs! Odessa barbs.
Some more clown loaches (I know too many for forever, but they are small and I couldn't help wanting to see a big pack)
Redline torpedos
I also added some danios eventually, because all the fish were hanging around the bottom. I thought they would bring some more of the others up higher, but it seems they are not comfortable with the filament barbs.

Wow did you get some rest lol.

Fast forward a couple of months...
I gave up with the plants!
I got some ok looking fake ones, but I'm not sure I'm convinced how they look.
Had a couple of losses. One bad delivery of Odessa barbs, but the company were great at replacing.
One of the original Bristlenose blocked 2 clown loaches in a cave and all 3 died.
And one of the female filament barbs died of a broken heart in the breeding I think.

But what should I do?
I've been watching too many monster tanks and have an itch that isn't scratched.
Once the clown loaches have some more size I may go for bigger fish. Oscars, Bichir?
