Ok so I just picked up a pre-loved 250 Gallon which was a Salt water reef tank, while I have alot of things to do on this tank to get it into working order for my Big Cats I figured I'd throw out the chance to see what someone else would do for the Filtration system, it came with a 900GPH pump, a 40watt UV and a Acrylic sump which is going to be useless for any sump which I intend to use. It's pre-drilled with 4 holes (two in each back corner) the space under the tank (inside the stand) is 59" by 29" by around (i didn't messure yet) 32" high ... so lets here some dream filtration for a large space like that and also keep in mind that I can't have to much bio filtration since I have large South american catfish in the tank (Huge Bio loads)

This should be fun :D

Make a standard W/D sump (3 dividers) the max size that will fix under the tank. Pre-filter (multi-layer) over the drip plate and everything else mixed bio-material (in all 3 dividers and around the pump (don't make a special compartment for pump)). Put the UV (check the bulb) on the output of the pump for the return and split the return to a spray bar and a RUGF (or just bottom circulation).

Keep it simple and large, clean the pre-filter regularly and your good to go.

Forget "Japanese" filtration, let's start "American" filtration.

THe 3 compartments are to slow/ mix the water flow and saturate the bio-media with 'dirty' water. OMG disappointed in your double post. But i am proud of those awesome ideas.

Basically joe nailed this. Make the sumps carry as much bio-media as possible and don't waste any space. After the w/d area I'd probably use as much super bio media (sintered glass, ceramics) as possible, but also throw some of it in the w/d area. Put as many different types of media in every bio-area, as different types of bacteria prefure different types of surfaces.

hmmm i really can't add much to this.

Well since I'm Canadian I guess I can follow the American model

Pretty much what I had in mind already but the RUGF as I don't use a substrate in the Big cat tanks so I had actually considered instead to run both of the retuns to the bottom of the tank and use them to keep the ... umm bio material ;) off the bottom ( the problem with that is that with Fish like RTC's they have a habit of trying to rearrange the pipes LOL)

I'm not even sure I'll use the UV Light at this point and might just Craigslist it :D as I've never needed one in the past and don't really feel that I would gain anything by using it since my fish are fed frozen prepared foods and always kept in several growouts before getting to a size suitable of being in this tank... it'll be in a windowless room with lowlighting so growth isn't an issue either...I'll still consider it though considering it's working just fine ;) yeah I checked the blub already LOL, I was alittle stoked that it was included with the tank :D
