Well, just moved my community from their 90 to a 125. Biggest difference is obviously the length, giving the balas an additional couple feet to continue to grow out in.
Previously there was no real trouble in the tank, my large sev keeps order. Well after moving everyone last night, I woke up this morning to find my school or neons has gone from 15 to 2!!!! What do I see but one bala and one raphael catfish both going after them in their caves. So theyre completely wiped out now, all were huge for neons, have had them for over a year. Then the catfish and plecos started going at it on the logs, I have never seen my plecs attempt to bite anyone before, all morning they have been doing this for prime spots.
I know balas will eat anything, but no one, not even the sev has ever gone after the neons. Really a frustrating morning as I loved watching the entire group dart along. Pumped to have a bigger tank for everyone to grow in, but it was a bit of a surprise, no deaths in a cramped 4 ft 90, but 13 dead in one night in the spacious 6footer. WTF

ouch...

maybe its a territorial thing since they are all in a new tank

maybe it's cause you are an irish fan.. i'm exploring every possible scenerio.

HAH possibly, my irish have been hurtin in most sports recently.

I am surprised the neons lasted this long too, I have heard of many having problems keeping them. I am guessing it must be about the new surroundings...I tried to move all their old decor over to the new tank in an attempt to dissuade the fighting, instead it seemed to give the balas too much room. They just swim across the surface looking below for some neons to dive bomb. Nothing I can do now but damn it sucks, keep looking at the tank loving it and hating it.

Yes, it sucks when the obvious finally happens.

Especially when youve known its been a dice roll from the begining. When I added my arrow crab to my reef with my spotted grouper... he was always out in the front of the tank. The next day, no where to be found. I knew in the pit of my heart at that point that I never should have added him. But I found him about a week later. As it turns out the grouper is afraid of him, and NEVER comes out of the rockwork now. Its a shame about your fish... but I find it hard to think its a territory issue. Yeah, they are figuring out whos turf is whos...but why should that induce feeding? I always rearranged my decor in cichlid tanks before adding new fish for this EXACT purpose. To confuse them about whos territory is whos and take it easier on the new commer. Thats why I kinda find it out that this is how that worked out. Really sorry about your loss. :(
