Ph at or above 8.2, absolutely no ammonia, no nitrites and as little nitrates as you can manage 
. I recommend using a cichlid salt to help with PH, there happens to be a cichlid salt thread right around here somewhere. I also say that weekly water changes are absolutely necessary, and, of course, good filtration.

not part of water parameters, but make sure the cichlids get the appropriate diet (esp for herbivores)
