Hello All, I'm moving soon and going to be able to set up two different tanks. I'm in the planning phases and would like some help before I get my equipment. My goal is to breed some hybrids. I'd like to try to breed a rose queen to an Argentea. I've been told Argentea's are hard to breed but I'd still like to try. What would your suggestions be as far as tank size and setup? Also any tips you wish you'd known before getting into breeding hybrids? Thanks

If you are going to breed, you'll need a second tank just for grow outs...good luck my man. It should be cool if you can pull it off...use which is the male and which is the female...I would go with at least a couple 55's if not bigger, but at least a 55 for the grow out.

I agree, I've seen Argentea's breed before so don't be discouraged by that. For tank size I agree that a 55 is a suitable grow out, I would go by footprints when looking for a tank for the parents. Height really isn't a worry make sure you have at least 18" depth and 48" in length. GOOD LUCK

If you're really serious about getting into this I would recommend setting up stock tanks. Few people have room for actual glass tanks. Concrete vats are what they use commercially. I see the plastic ones on sale on CL all the time for 100-200$ range. I've also seen wading pools bought from second hand stores used with a lot of success. Also might want to invest in a few piscavores. Out of hundreds (or thousands) of spawn you might find a winner or two you can work with. A hungry friend really helps make the process seem less wasteful. Without the room, resources and planning most people are really just capable of ruining pure strains. A whole lot of deformed mouth BPs were created to make Rose Queen happen. In the city of Toledo I've never even seen a Rose Queen in person. I have seen thousands of parrots. Good luck!
