i am seting up a grow out tank 20 gal.nothing huge. i am going to use gravel, water, and filter media from an well established tank. my question is should the tank need to cycle or will it already be cycled since all the stuff used is from an already established tank?

Did this with a 40 gal breeder recently, I ended up running the filter on the established tank for a month in advance but I'm pretty sure just moving the media would have done the same thing.

Moving the substrate will also be very beneficial. I don't believe that moving the water will serve any true purpose but if it makes you feel better about the move I'd say do it, I wouldn't fill it with more than 50% old water though.

Also, I would add only a few fish at a time, one or two really and give it a week between adding them to make sure all of your parameters stay in a good range.

On a side note, I ran my breeder for 2 days with no fish just to make sure I didnt spike anywhere.

If you test it out and all is well I'd say you should be safe. Just my $.02

thanks .. i am glad you said only add 50% of old water i would have filled the whole tank lol.. i am trying to get this thing up and running fast. my jags have new babies almost once a month.. thus far all have turned into food. it kills me. so now i have about 15 from the last batch in a mini tank in side my main tank . and they are about 1/4" and the jags just laid another batch. i thought convicts were bad. hope this made sense

Small tank, small issue........The water will cycle fast, faster than the origianl ground zero way....Throw in a dozen tetras to support the ammonia that is needed to feed the nitrate,........

thank you PDRed302, and iimportracer. tank is setup and running. i figured i would let it go overnight ,and in the A.M pick up some tetras, and give it a day or 2 to see where everything is at and go from there :)
