Hello all, well have been thinking of setting up my tank again latey, was going to awhile ago, but had alot of other things going on, so i put it on hold for awhile. Well its a 4ft tank and i wanta get everything in before i get fish in. So ive got the tank, a filter, a heater, glass mag cleaner, testing water kit, stones for bottom, and a air pump. Wot ele would i need for a tropical setup. Wot ele do i need to get to finish the setup of this tank, i just wanta check with everyone to see if ive got everything in an if am missing anything.

Well i think i need a light, was thinking of:
t5 or t8 light = wot do yous thing?
plants = live or real, wot do yous thing?

Sorry if this seems a stuiped post, but really would like help from other people who know alot more than me on this, as i think it would be silly of me to just jump into making this new tank without having everything covered, u know :).

Well any help would be great and again let me know if you think i should get other things and wot they would be.

Thank You
Brendan

Could you post the dimensions of your tank and what kind of filter?

If you want to do live plants I'd go with a 4ft dual strip light and a glass hood, these are much cheaper at a local hardware store. T-5 have higher output but may be harder to find locally. This will allow you to keep many plants alive. If you want the more light sensitive plants go for a dual power compact light 96 watt, these are more expensive and so are the bulbs.

Get an air stone or air curtain for the air pump to defuse the bubbles.

Can't really give you any more advice with out knowing what you plan to keep.

Thanks vladfloroff for the advise. Well its about 12inch width, 18inch height and 48inch length, this is rough, will take real mesurements tomorrow, but gives u an idea of how big it is. Well am planning on a tank with a few defferent things, like a red tale shark, some shrimp, umm maybe an apple snail, and other nice fish which are sorta bright, but am waiting more to i get everything in and everything covered before i go throughing fish in and they dont get on or die u know, thats why all ideas i get here will help alot with new setup. Just wondering if am missing anythin important out or any ideas on things i should get.

o and ive got a fluval 4 plus filter

Thanks Brendan

yeah i would make sure you have a good light system. if i were you i would buy it oline you can find some really good deals even for the t9. make sure you have your slime coat and you might want to pick up some meds incase you get ich from your new fish. you pretty much have everything. is it a 75 gal? what kind of fish do you want?

i think you can buy something to put in the water to help jump start the good bacteria in the tank, i dont remember what its called. i havnt needed to use it because i can just take water from anouther fish tank to start a new one. you could always fill it up get it running and cycle it with some gold fish or something. that way it doesnt hurt your fish. i have a 75 gallon that is four foot by 1 1/2 foot by 1 1/2 foot. that my be what you have. i got my light system for it for 130 including shipping which is a good deal. i just cant remember where online... if your interested ill ask my fiance when he gets home he will remember.

It depends what you put in the tank as to get real or fake. Ultimately, it's up to you if you wanted a planted tank or not.

If you get a planted tank, no bigger SA cichlids as most of them will annihilate the plants.

Thanks alot all for the great help yous are giving me. Well i have a lid on my tank, heres my tank here in another post, http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171373&page=3 thats when i had rbelles in it. Well a good lighting system is wot i think i need to, pocahotass if u can send me a link to where u got yrs id be very greatfull, as thats the main thing i just need now. Could i ask wot does slime coat mean? sorry i stuiped at times lol. Well i will do the cycle when ive got everything in and sorta ready, dont wanta start it yet till ive gotin lights and all in, so then it would be a matter of just letting it cycle for a few weeks or so, then i could just add the fish. Good idea on the med, better get that in, as could be handy to have when adding new fish, incase something breaks out.

Thanks alot everyone again, really good help here, any other ideas let me know :)

Thanks Brendan
