i made the mistake of not rinsing the seachem flourite black sand before putting it in there. i also added the water and sand at the same time (super excited). after 3 water changes and a rinse of the sand it seems to be stuck in this condition with a layer of light dirtish colored stuff over the tank:

my gfs temporary touch on the tank:

the wet dry is hooked up but i stopped it to see if that would help settle the water.
i am curious about what direction i should take in clearing this up. more water changes? a mechanical filter? a chemical like decloud?

I did the same thing, I did almost a 50% water change then turned on the filter it cleared up before the next night. I hope it clears up for you soon.

Just a tip if you do this again - in the future line the sand or gravel w/cardboard before you add the water, this helps to not mix the sub w/ the water not 100% but real close. I use cardboard from beer cases on new set ups. Accu-clear water clairifier helps drop the particles to the bottom. You'll probably want to clean your filtration system as well. I've had this happen before with sand and it can take days for it to settle.

Is it safe to assume piranhas are going in this tank since you posted it in the piranha section? What kind?

Sorry, i've got nothin useful other then it'll take time for that to clear up

prbly redbellies. it depends on what i can find in CO. right now waiting for a light to get it planted. Ps will be the last thing i add.

i did the same thing, just do some water changes and give it time, it will settle

If you happen to have a magnum 350 with the micron filter cartridge you can throw that on there. That's usually what I do to help

GL finding piranha in Colorado as they're illegal unless you have a permit which probably isn't easy to get.better check your state laws as some states have hefty fines up to felony for illegal game.ask the owner or riverwonders. That guys on the run n facing multiple felonies.Kevinflemming in same boat as you living in Arizona.last I heard Texas has a 1000$ or 1500$ fine per fish.fines n penalties vary from state to state.I would definitely check into your states piranha laws first!

Yes check your laws. I live next to a city that has piranha band. But the county is ok to own them in weird huh. The fines for owning one in city limits is 100 bucks per fish. And they make you kill them in the spot. So please check your laws.
