Just picked up a tank from off of craigslist. Guy estimates it from 35-40 gal long with solid wood stand, gravel filter heater, tops for $60. Didn't have time to measure it, picked it up at lunch and had to get back to work.

My question is that it was ran as a saltwater tank including the crushed coral gravel.

What do I need to do to the gravel/tank since I plan on using it for freshwater? And, the filter he gave me is called a "Skilter" I think. Is this ok to use for freshwater or do I need to get a new one?

Any advice/comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks.:grinno:

IME If it smells anything like the Acrylic 50g I picked up from a CL seller who used it for saltwater, the first thing I would do is get it out of the car......quick! Next into the garage with it filled with bleach and water (after you get the gravel etc out) for a couple of days then rinse well with cold water and fill again, this time with water and a couple of boxes of Bicarb to get rid of those stubborn smells (including the bleach). Then clean with vinegar and water and final rinse, maybe a bit OTT but that smell just seems to linger worse than a wet dog.

It did stink when I picked it up, just put it in the garage. Smell went away as soon as I took the crushed coral out and cleaned it. Cleaned the tank and removed all the salt residue.
