Are there any NA species that can be kept in a 20 gallon tank (aside from minnows) with good filtration (its cycled 10 times an hr) also, what temp would it have to be kept at? the tank is a 20 h, so it is 24 x 16 x 12. im thinking some smaller pan fish like bluegills, or maybe a single brook trout. any sugestions??

sunfish

orange spots:
they do will with pellet food (feed live or frozen food about 1 time a week)
i would not go over a pair, they get about 5" long. I have about 7 in a 125 gal planted tank and they are very personable, they were shy at 1st but they come right to the front of the tank now. they are not overly aggressive to other tank mates either.

blue spots, or black banded would be ok, but they are more difficult to keep, more demanding in water quality, conditions and feedings

20 gal is to small for a bluegill, an adult bluegill needs at least a 55 gal tank by itself and be prepared to do a ton of water changes to keep nitrates at a decent level.

you could keep darters

you could keep madtoms

temp for all the above is room temp, if the water gets over about 75 f add a bubble stone, in my opinion its not the water temp that gets NA pan fish its the dissolved o2 amount. (the water temp gets into the 80's where i live for a good part of the year)

I recommend you stay away from brook trout, I live in the Great State of Alabama so i have no personal experience with trout, but from what i have read they need cold water (60 f and lower) with high o2 content (7ppm and up) and that tank is to small for a brook trout.

my 2 cents

you can start a SINGLE sunfish type in a 20 gal but in a year or so YOU MUST MOVE IT out to a larger tank ..

As for filtration a wet/dry set up is really the only way to go . in order to keep this fish for year's ..

Killifish (fundulus) or pipefish. Both are brackish and I have kept both before.
