So my wife gave me some good news today, for my birthday she wants to get me a new, big tank! I thought I'd have to beg to get another one. So now it's a matter of how big and what brand. I'm limited to what I can get where I live as well. So maybe I'll have to order online. Does anyone know of a reputable tank place in western Canada? Any ideas would be appreciated

I am in Ontario. You need to hit the nearest BigAls and get a Marineland tank. I have 8, they are premium construction and come with a lifetime warranty to the original owner. The biggest is a 7ft 265g, 400lbs dry and 1400 bucks. The 6ft 220 goes for about 850 I think.

Its easier to decide what tank size you'll need/want if you first decide what you want to stock it with. Decide on your stock, figure out what filtration you'll want and then get the tank that fits your needs. Thats how I do it.

We do have things like craigslist, just usually don't find great buys on there. I am looking though! I prefer hang on the back filters, so I am not looking to have a sump. I am wanting 125+ gallons. There is a 4'x4'x2.5' for sale for 350 that I am interested in but it's just the tank. I kinda want to do brand new

Take it from me, you're going to want a sump if you go over 125gallons. That is the limit of HOBs in my opinion. Im a HOB guy too - hate canisters - but there is not one on the market that can turnover enough water. I have two Aquaclear 110s, which I feel is the best HOB out there on a 150 - same footprint of a 125 just taller - & they dont move half the water I want them too. Learn all you can about sumps and get one from the beginning to save yourself some trouble down the road. Its sumps from here on out for me.

I'm the opposite of this in that I hate sumps on my tanks. I prefer canisters and hob or a combo of the two. Its a matter of personal opinion really and I can say go with what you like/know because it will be better in the end. Wavemakers make a huge difference with the filters to direct waste and doing water changes will be key with either filter you decide.

I can honestly say I've never used a sump and it just looks like more cost, more tank, more work. I do however see that if I'm going big enough, a sump is probably the only way to go for water turnover and ultimately to be cost effective. My power bill is already high enough haha. I'm appreciating the input
