i just bought a 200 gallon tank. I plan on using it for saltwater. When I bought the tank it came with a fluval fx5 filter. Do you think this will do the job? I plan on putting corals and such in the tank. I am newer to saltwater. Any help is great!!

Welcome aboard

Yes the F×5 can be used for Saltwater. I suggest doing thourough research since you are a newbie to Saltwater.

When reading about others experiences it seemed everyone was worried about the nitriets being produce and that the GPH would not be high enough. Do I need to run another canister? Or should I switch to another system entirely?

Thank you for all the help!! Yes it is definitely a lot but it was a good deal. The tank is not drilled and is glass so I won’t drill it. I have been reading so much but I’m slightly confused do I need power heads and wave makers? It seemed some people did this but others didn’t and couldn’t find much on what plan of action is best.

Since you have live rocks in a SW tank they are full of micro organism wich serves beneficial bacteria they need oxygenated water. To get that you have to have wavemakers or powerheads. I ran a 1400L SW tank some years ago and had about 70000L an hour flowing with wavemakers just to get the water flowing through all of the 400kg liverocks i had in the tank. Then i had a sump with about 600L water in it. In that sump i had filter socks osmos supply, a huge protein skimmer, heaters and all the electronics for the tank such as probes for diffrent parameters. But as stated with bigger system easier maintaining. It was a hell to start it up but once it was stable it was a blast having it. I didnt have much corals at all since i had a 30cm arothron immaculatus in it wich is a huge predatory puffer, two snowflake eels and two pterois volitans in it

I think if you plan to have coral (SPS or LPS), it's likely you should have circulation. Im no expert but aside from benefits with circulation, it helps push "food" to the corals?
