Unfortunately, my beloved spotted gar has just left me after 6 years :(. No idea how old he was when I brought home, but my spotted shall be missed.
I have a 125 gallon tank with a small silver Aro (10-12") and a small (8-10") very reclusive polpterous senegalus.
Any thoughts on tankmates?
Looking for something carniverous or that will accept pellets. I have them on a diet of fish, shrimp, and pellets to supplement.

Why not start over again with a Gar? ( just a suggestion, since you obviously loved it )

Thats always an option. Just wanted to get some ideas to switch things up a bit, but realistically there is a good chance I will pick up another gar once I get over this one.
I think the aro could hang with some moderately tough customers, I just worry about the p. senegalus.

how about a school of some silver dollars or pink tailed chalceus? how about catfish like a lima SN cat?

You have a wide variety of options. It's almost impossible to list all the possibilitys. Narrow down what fish shapes/colors and groups of fish you like then go from there.

thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I looked up the pearsei and the bocourti as I wasnt familiar, but damn, they are some fine looking fish. Not sure where I could see any of them though, I am in Southern NY (50 miles north of NYC) if anyone knows of a good fish shop.
Lima Shovelnose is a good idea also. I contemplated picking one up in the past but I have always housed pretty large TSN's so I opted against it. Maybe now is the time to give one a try.
I generally like fish in the "other" categories and I am always looking for something that I could house successfully.
I think some motion in the mid-to-lower levels of the tank would be a welcome idea, such as the suggested silver-dollars or maybe even some red-hooks, cause I normally keep beasts that just hang-out and get active only to eat and I'd like to switch things up a bit.
SO my perfect fit would probably be a mid-level carnivore that is active and not overly aggressive towards my poly and aro. I have never picked up fish for color really, I like prints, spots, etc. sometimes, but I just like the interesting fish. I am not averse to color though.

If you do decide on something like pearsei, I think Ken Davis has them at pretty good prices. I have one that was originally from him (got it from Onion) and it is doing great and growing fast
