today i had to go borrow my girlfriends 30 gallon tank so each of my oscars can have their own tank because they are getting big and they are getting aggressive. i now have a 5 inch oscar in the 30g and a 4.5 incher in the 25g. i understand this is only temporary, im getting a 90g in a few weeks. im wondering if their aggressive temperment will go away when they are in their big tank? because right now they are more aggressive than my dads piranhas. are they going to be ok if i put in a jack dempsey and buttikoferi in with them? or is mixing these fish a death wish?

thanks for the help

Its common for many fish to be more aggro then piranha...they have a heck of a legend but in the end in most cases its just that..a legend.

You need a big tank yesterday for those poor fish. In the big tank your agro should go down a bit but there is no guarantee it will. They also tend to hit a super agro level at that size and IMO they clam down as they get bigger eventually...but its different for every fish.

ok a big tank is NOT a 90 will be needing a 180-240 for those boys. in a 90 yes they will stay agressive. no room to move

Their temperament should remain the same, but fighting should be reduced by them having a larger tank.

I wouldn't put a Butti in with your Oscars, he'll most likely end up killing them both.

A 6 foot tank would be a lot better. A 125 is plenty of room, but they may still be aggressive

I don't find my Oscars to be aggressive, but they are very territorial. When mine were very young they were both in a 55 gallon tank until they hit the 3" mark, they started fighting over territory, so I seperated them into their own 55 gallon tanks, later on when I purchased my 125 gal. I reunited them after being seperated for about 8 months, and they have gotten along great. Granted, the first couple days were kinda tough, since they were used to being by themselves. But, so far so good. The only other fish in that tank are 2 sliver dollars, and 2 plecos, which are going to a friends pond here in a couple of weeks when it warms up enough. ( They have grown to about 14") which is too large for this tank and too much poo to clean up.

I think a 125 gallon is minimum for 2 oscars with no other tankmates other than a few silver dollars.

ok so lets say i get a 125g tank, and i only put one of my oscars in it, what are some other BIG beautiful fish i could put in with him.. like the bitti, jack dem, jaguar, dovii, texas, green terror.. you get the idea

what would like 2 or 3 good tankmates be out of those fish in a 125 with an oscar

Out of those choices, the best ones to go with an oscar are the jack dempsey and green terror. The texas may be all right also.
The butti, jaguar, and dovii are going to be too aggressive for an oscar to handle.

I have tried Jaguar, texas, green terror and Jack dempsey the only one that was ok with the oscar was the jack dempsey. All these fish will kill the oscar. I find that the best tank mate for a oscar is a oscar.
I ended up getting another tank just for the oscars and needed a big tank for the jaguar, texas, green terror. I think if you like oscars just have a oscar tank they are big p*#*y when it comes to other mean cichlids. At the end of it I now have two big tanks and need to get a bigger one becuase I tried to get oscar some friends.
