So i got myself a gorgeous tat from my lfs about 4 inches, he had some minor damage on his nose from the distributor but it wasn't very bad. iv have had him about a week and he has eaten a few feeders but he hasn't gotten into a good feeding habit. should i wait until he is aggressively destroying feeders to break him off live? or should i try getting him onto prepared food while he is still pretty small? and thoughts are appreciated. Also he is in a 120 gal with a 4" ebjd and a 4" red severum that eat prepared food so he can follow their example lol

It took 2 weeks to a month for mine to settle in and get tame enough to see me as the food source. When it swims to the front of the tank or it actually looks like it's interested in what you're doing, even if it just turns to face you, you're in business. As long as you're the food source, you're good to go.

Watch out for the chicklets! Lol!!! When a fish doesn't have specialized toothy feeding jaws ,it usually means they don't care to use them for just about anything! Including rearranging the aquarium and beating the brakeshoes off your Hydrolycus!!!

If he's not chasing feeders then just start breaking off live now. If he gets adjusted to eating live and you try to break him it will be a lot more difficult.

Agreed.

I also feel that the cichlids are likely stressing him. Silver tooth fish and cichlids normally don't work well together. When they're small, the cichlids beat on the silver tooth fish, when they're big the silver tooth fish eat the cichlids.

Cichilids are getting traded in today. May try for a knife any other suggestions?

Well cichilids are gone, however I broke down and gave him a feeder today because I think he is getting ready to shed his fangs (one of them is loose either bent too far in or won't go in his mouth) how long does it take for them to shed and what else should I expect?

I'd keep feeding live on a timed schedule until he gets comfortable. When I had mine, I turned on the light during feeding time.. a couple weeks later, I'd turn it on as usual, throw in pellets and he got the idea it was food. Getting payara off live takes a lot of patience & time. Also, be careful & quarantine before you feed. Payara are very prone to ich.

It takes about a day to shed. Tats grow very slow compared to the other two main species (armatus & scomberoides).
